Duties and responsibilities to follow to become a successful online learner

For becoming successful in our lives, being responsible for our actions, activities, learning is very important. There are a certain set of skills and qualities that all have to follow and practice for achieving their goals and objectives.

Today in the digital era we are living in online teaching platforms that are growing rapidly. As students follow some responsibilities for effective learning in conventional classes, the same way they have to do here as well. Let us discuss the duties and responsibilities that all students should follow to become successful in online teaching.

Responsibilities to follow for successful online learning

  • Being punctual to the classes

As we go on time for our conventional classes, the same way it is an important responsibility for all the students to be on time for the classes. Latecomers not only miss the lessons themselves but also distract others from effectively learning.

  • Maintaining a right study space

In conventional methods, we have seen a proper and appropriate classroom build where all students study together. Similarly, it is the responsibility of all online students to have the right study space. Have a neat and well-organized study desk. A noisy space can affect your studies as well as other students' learning. Therefore, having a space that is free from environmental distractions is important.

  • Checking the networking device being used in advance

We all know that online classes are taken with the help of an internet connection and a networking device. To take classes smoothly without any interruption and connectivity issues, students must check the device beforehand. This will help to join the classes timely and understand, participate in classes smoothly without any technical issue in the device.

  • Response when called out

In online teaching platforms, face-to-face and physical interactions are not possible. Teachers cannot see students in real life and hence checking whether they are actively involved or not becomes difficult. To help teachers with this, all students must respond whenever called out.

Don't keep your camera and mic off when the teacher is calling. If you do so, this can be a disrespectful act towards the teacher, further affecting the learning of students. To become a good online student, all must actively respond when teachers call out the names. Keep cooperating and interacting with teachers for successful learning.

  • Appropriate dressing

When in a classroom, students need to be appropriately dressed. If you have a fixed uniform given by the educational institutions, it is important to wear the same. Otherwise, all online learning students should wear appropriate formal clothing only for the classes.

How to make online learners accountable: tips for teachers

1. Set rules for your class

To make students responsible, teachers should set some rules and regulations. Students must know what is expected from them, what all responsibilities and duties they must follow to become effective online students. For example, set rules about joining time to the class, message the teachers before being absent, or sending an application, submitting the homework on the date given, keeping cameras on when asked, not typing inappropriate messages in the chatbox of the classroom app being used, etc are some rules which teachers should set and explain to students for making them accountable.

2. Don't be too strict with them

In the present academic times, the mode of education has been drastically changed for students. All are trying to adapt to online teaching. But coping with this new mode of learning and managing everything technically takes time. And therefore teachers should not be overly strict with students.

For example, for giving them the time of home submission, give them one day extra to make PDFs, files and upload them on the apps. Allow students to enter the class even if they are five to ten minutes late if they have a valid technical reason. Use LMS to manage the record of their progress and guide them to become more accountable for their studies. Help them to learn and become responsible gradually.

3. Model the responsible behavior

Students adopt what they see happening around themselves. So in order to make students responsible in the classes, it is essential for teachers to model and portray the same. For example, if you have asked your students to come for the classes at nine am in the morning, be there at least five to ten minutes before so that you can activate the class link and can add the students one by one too.

When students will see their teachers being highly responsible in terms of punctuality they will also do the same. Maintain the right teaching space, use the appropriate language to talk, etc to make students follow the same behavior.
